Old Testament - King James 46.0

The Old Testament of the Bible provides a comprehensive account of the origins of everything, detailing the creation of the earth and the first human beings. It also explores how humanity has fallen into the clutches of evil. Throughout the Old Testament, God communicates with chosen individuals in Israel, conveying His promises, commands, and statutes. We also encounter the stories of various influential individuals from Israel who played a significant role in God's promise of redemption through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Old Testament consists of thirty-nine books, written by unknown authors who crafted each book with distinct narratives and messages. These stories highlight God's relationship with humanity, showcasing His power, sovereignty, faithfulness, supernatural wonders, compassion, love, and mercy.

The Old Testament can be divided into four major sections:

1. The Pentateuch (Torah): Comprising the first five books of Moses — Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy — this section offers accounts of creation, God's covenant with humanity, and focuses on figures such as Abraham and his descendants. It begins with Joseph's death and the subsequent enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt. However, God promises to deliver them and uses Moses to perform extraordinary signs and wonders that ultimately lead to their liberation. Yet due to their disobedience and rebellion, the Israelites spend 40 years wandering in the wilderness before reaching the Promised Land. During this time, God imparts laws and regulations as guidance for living in holiness before Him.
2. Historical Books: This collection includes Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther. Through these texts, we witness the relationship between God's blessings and curses within His covenant, and how obedience or disobedience impacts the people.
3. Wisdom Writings: Comprising Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon, these poetic and wisdom texts offer guidance on righteous living before God and fellow humans. They provide deeper insights into life's observations rooted in the fear of the Lord, which forms the foundation of wisdom. Although wisdom is displayed throughout the entire Bible, these books contain a significant portion of the Old Testament's wisdom writings.
4. Major Prophets and Minor Prophets: The terms "major" and "minor" do not denote greater or lesser significance but refer solely to the size of the books. Major Prophets include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel, while Minor Prophets consist of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and the final book of the Old Testament, Malachi. These prophetic texts include prophecies concerning God's promises to Israel and reveal His true nature as a loving and compassionate God. Some of these prophecies find fulfillment in the arrival of the Messiah in the New Testament.
